It would be a good idea to have a backup of your system before running chkdsk /f. (Never a bad idea to have a good backup, actually.) Click Start, then Run, then type CMD.EXE and press Enter. In the black window that appears, type chkdsk /f and press Enter. When asked if you would like to schedule the disk check the next time the computer boots, press Y. Then restart, and let the chkdsk complete. This could take some time depending on the speed of the computer and the hardware involved, the size of the disk, and any problems chkdsk may encounter. When chkdsk completes, the computer will reboot, and the results should be logged to the Application event log (Event Viewer in Administrative Tools), with an event with a source of Winlogon and and ID of 1001.
